Gulf Islands National Seashore-Okaloosa Island

The Gulf Islands National Seashore on Okaloosa Island is a great alternative to the beach.  The park is located on the bayside overlooking Choctawhatchee Bay.  Remember, Okaloosa Island is a barrier island which connects the cities of Fort Walton Beach to Destin.  You have the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the bay on the other.  The Gulf Islands National Seashore is right next to our condo at Destin West.I love coming to the bay if the ocean is rough and the waves are too big for my little boy to safely play.  The water is always calm on the bay and it is shallow for many yards out.  You will often see fisherman far out in the knee deep water.  As you can see in the pictures, my little guy can walk and swim a good distance away and have more freedom than he would in the ocean. Another “plus” is there are always lots of hermit crabs in the bay.  This is fun for my son to hunt for them.  He’ll watch them quickly duck into their shell when he lifts them up.  He likes to try and touch their tiny feet inside.  I am worried one day the crab might be braver than he is! Ouch!!  A fun game is to see how many hermit crabs we can collect.  My lil’ man will drop them in a bucket with water and sound.  We will count them and watch them slowly come out and crawl all over each other.   It is fun to throw them back into the water.  A cool marine biology lessen for my little guy!We will take long walks along the shore and search for shells as well.  We found a whole patch of them the other day!  You usually do not find large patches of shells like this on the ocean side. This day we found a dead sting ray :( poor thing!  I wonder if it was killed by a motor boat.  The tail was cut off and it had little cuts in it’s wing.  My son could NOT get enough of looking at him. What’s up with little boys and dead animals?  He wanted to get close and investigate.  The waves kept pushing the stingray ashore and moving his wings up and down so he almost looked alive.  I guess it is pretty interesting to look at something up close and discover even though it’s dead.  Like all boys, my son then took rocks and shells and began to throw them at him.  At first I felt guilty, I mean it’s a stingray!!  And then I thought, well, he is dead.  So knock yourself out kid!!
