Gigi’s-Rosemary Beach

One of my favorite shops in Rosemary Beach is Gigi’s. Gigi’s is a children’s boutique and toy store. It is located right on Main Street and is so fun and friendly, you can’t help but walk in, even if you don’t have children!7 The red awning and bright sign immediately draw you to it along with the huge red cart on the sidewalk filled with outdoor toys.4As soon as you enter the shop, it is a little hard to take it all in. The store is filled from floor to ceiling, every inch of space is occupied with toys of every sort, jewelry, shoes and clothing. The coolest and most fascinating draw for my kids is the large model train that runs on tracks from the ceiling! It is so fun to see this large train doing figure eights and running the entire perimeter of the store! My kids stop and stare every time!6All of the clothes and shoes are darling although pretty expensive! I hear the owner really tries to purchase things that you can’t just find any ole place and she succeeds. The clothes really are precious!3 And with the toys it is the same way. Very unusual toys that you just can’t find at Wal-Mart or Target. They have anything from Spy Kits to jewelry, dress up clothes, huge stuffed animals knight sets, outdoor toys of every kind and games. My favorite toy was an engineering set for little girls. It just came out in specialty stores and is very hard to find but it is here at Gigi’s! Oh, and the staff is friendly and helpful.8Another thing that I love about Gigi’s is that the store is very active in the community. The store is always participating in their own unique way to bring joy to area children. For instance, in the summer, they set up huge art tables at the Kid’s Rock the Block Party. 2 Kids can decorate their own paper crowns with all kinds of stick on jewels, markers and stickers. So fun!1 They also set up a lemonade stand in front of Gigi’s EVERY Saturday during the summer. Kids man the stand, singing and laughing and drawing everyone to them.5 AND all proceeds of the stand go to the nearby animal shelter, Alaqua. Pretty cool, huh? So take my advice, and make sure that you check out this fantastic shop the next time you visit Rosemary Beach!

Starlight Ballet-Rosemary Beach

by Ashley Wallace aka “Shelley’s Favorite Sister”

We are all about Rosemary Beach and their fun, FREE, family-friendly activities! Our latest adventure was to see the Starlight Ballet.Ballet-1 The Starlight Ballet is held every year during the summer. It starts late at 8pm but the late hour is so that it will actually be dark outside! The sun sets super late in the summer, you know! The ballet takes place on the St. Augustine Green which is a beautiful lawn located in the back of Rosemary Beach. Everyone brings blankets, lawn chairs, even picnics and they sit and watch the ballet perform under the stars and moonlight! How lovely!lawn

As we got out of the car, you could see all of these families getting out as well with their chairs and baskets. It was really fun and exciting for the kids as we all walked down the beautiful tree-lined cobblestone streets back to St. Augustine Green. There was already quite a crowd when we got there at 7:45pm. We were still able to get a really good seat, though. The green also has a low stucco wall lining the park and benches if you would rather sit there. The performance featured the Northwest Florida Ballet Company as well as several international guest artists. The performance started with a traditional ballet piece – lots of ballerinas en pointe with tutus – that was all my girls needed! They were actually very good, even my boys were entertained!Ballet-3Ballet-2 Then there were two modern pieces which my boys thought were hilarious for some reason! The modern pieces were followed by parts from West Side Story Ballet. It was all very good, the kids loved it and the surroundings were lovely. That night, the moon was the closest that it will be for 25 more years and as we were watching the ballet, it rose behind the trees and then up into the sky. It was magical!B But the show did start at 8pm and that is LATE for little kids! Toddlers around us were melting down! They were rolling and screaming, poor babies! Even my husband and I were starting to melt down! Then my husband had a moment of sheer brilliance – he checked the program and saw that an intermission was coming up. “When the intermission starts, let’s get up and leave. The kids have had fun and they don’t know what an intermission is!” He is a genius! So as soon as West Side Story came to a close, we gave a heartfelt round of applause and as everyone got up to stretch their legs and move around, we got the heck out of Dodge! The kids never suspected a thing and just kept thanking us for taking us to the ballet. It ended up being the perfect time to leave –  we did not push the kids to melt down mode and they felt like they had seen the whole thing! Win!Win! or as Michael Scott would say, “Win, win, win!”

Camp Helen State Park- Inlet Beach/Laguna Beach/Panama City Beach (Post 2)

…continued from Camp Helen State Park Post 1

So we took the long walk down the sandy path towards the beach, .6 miles.mom-path  Along the way, we saw beautiful picturesque scenes like Lake Powellbridge bridge-2 and gorgeous water oaks.OaksWe had to carry the little kids after a bit of walking.  That sand is hard for little ones to walk in and even harder when you are carrying one, whew!  But when the kids saw the water, they took off for it.  Even though we went to Camp Helen on a windy, cooler day in the early spring, those kids still wanted to get in the ice-cold water!  We told them to only get their feet wet (yeah right).  Shorts were coming off in the end.  Good thing we had a change of clothes.  (Note to self when living in the south by the beach, keep a change of clothes for the kids at all times.  It should be a part of your emergency pack.)kids The remnants of the old fishing pier destroyed by hurricanes is still on the beach at Camp Helen.  You can read about the history of it on their website.  Some fisherman were out having some fun while we were trying to keep our kids away from their lines. :/megThe kids had a blast in the water, as the adults enjoyed sitting on the sand and keeping warm (smart).  Next, we headed back to where Lake Powell meets the sandy shoreline of the beach.lake-pass  At times the lake does reach the ocean.  The water from the lake just meanders up to the ocean.  It’s very shallow and the kids love to play and look for shells or crabs.kids-lakekids-close-up-passThe day ended with fun, sun, sand, and the famous “plumber pose”. Nuff said.bootySo if you are looking for history, picturesque settings, serene lake views, beautiful beaches, fun for the kids, romantic walks, then head down to Camp Helen and enjoy the reasons why I am so thankful we HAVE state parks in our country.  A place for all to rejuvenate and enjoy what God has made :)
